According to a 12/08/15 Miami Today report, Miami County Commissioners have approved an extended agreement with MSC Cruises that include the cruise line’s expansion of operation from PortMiami. The Italian cruise line already operates from Miami. Their MSC Divina will sail from Miami year-round this year, and they’ve announced that the MSC Seaside, which is currently still under construction, will also sail exclusively from Miami beginning in December of 2017.
The MSC Seaside is the first of the cruise line’s new ultra-modern “Seaside” class of ships. The ship will have capacity for 4,140 guests.
MSC’s expanded Miami operations will bring additional revenue to the port and generate additional revenue for Miami business and services. The new agreement which provides MSC with preferred berthing at the port for the next 11 years. Miami Today reports that MSC guarantees a minimum of 425,000 passenger movements a year once the MSC Seaside begins operations from Miami. (“Passenger Movements” are when cruise ship passengers either embark or disembark from a cruise ship).
PortMiami will spend around $25 million in improvements to Terminal F, when the Seaside will be berthed.
